National Trails Day 2011 | Celebrate & Volunteer at Betasso Preserve This Year

Saturday, June 4 2011 is National Trails Day! National Trails Day is the American Hiking Society’s trail awareness program that seeks to inspire the public to learn about and celebrate trails while participating in outdoor activities, clinics and exhibits, and trail work projects. Outdoor enthusiasts, trail organizations, land management agencies, businesses and others come together the first Saturday of each June for National Trails Day. This year you can celebrate and help build a new trail section at Betasso Preserve!

Help Build the New Benjamin Trail to Fourmile Canyon Trail

Come out and join 60 volunteers from 8:30am-1:00pm to help Boulder County Parks & Open Space construct the new connector trail that will eventually connect the Benjamin Trail to Fourmile Canyon. This connector will eliminate the ride on Canyon to get to Betasso Preserve!

Boulder County is partnering with the North Face Boulder Store, Boulder Mountainbike Alliance (BMA) and Oskar Blues. Volunteer trail-builders will use hand tools to build new trail through forest groves and open meadows while enjoying spectacular views and fresh mountain air. The trail work is on steep terrain and will require a 1 mile hike to get to the work site. Oskar Blues Brewery is sponsoring an after party that will be a blast!

The trail project will run from 8:30am-1:00pm. Minimum age is 14 with adult supervision. Sign up soon as space is limited. To register please visit www.BoulderCountyOpenSpace.org/wildwork or call 303-678-6193 by June 1st.  When you sign up, please indicate that you are a BMA volunteer.

Photos | NCAR Mesa & Trailhead

The trailhead and mesa at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) provides a great spot to launch a hike or just relax and enjoy the view of the nearby mountains.

This shot is of a rocky outcrop sometimes called Dinosaur Mountain (probably a common name for a lot of rocky outcrops in CO). The Mallory Cave Trail ascends this outcrop.

Photos from Bluebell Mesa Trail at Chautauqua Park

Here are a couple photos from Bluebell Mesa Trail, which is part of the trail system at the Chautauqua Park area. Bluebell Mesa is a short loop that pulls off to the east from the main trail starting at the Chautauqua Rangers Cottage. While the climb up the front trail from Chautauqua will get your lungs warmed up, the Bluebell Mesa loop is short and relatively flat and traverses open Ponderosa Pine forest just at the park tree line. You can also reach this loop by heading up the road from Chautauqua to Bluebell Shelter.

Creeping Barberry, or Creeping Oregon-Grape (Mahonia repens), grows quite well under the Ponderosa Pine trees and is often the first plant to bloom in early spring. There is plenty of it thriving under the loose canopy of the trees. In early spring you’ll see the yellow blooms at ground level and in the summer you’ll see the blue berries of the plant.

This trail is a great late evening hike that provides a fantastic view of the Boulder valley while getting one out of the sun. From the outer portion of this mesa you can see north along the front range as well as Valmont and Boulder Reservoir. This is a higher traffic area and dogs are welcome. Parking to reach this area is at the Ranger’s Cottage at Chautauqua Park and can also be reached from the extensive Mesa Trail along the front of the Flatirons. Bluebell Mesa loop trail and Chautauqua Park are park of the Boulder Colorado Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP).
